Affiliations & Background •

The information listed here is considered public.

Background & Origins • Publicly Cyprus has claimed to be a native of The Far East, the Hingashi region, and due to his time spent in Kugane, this information is more or less accepted with little question otherwise. He can be seen wandering through Shirogane or out in the town of Kugane, occasionally seen also in Eorzea but very rarely does he stay overnight anywhere that isn't Kugane.

Overseas Trade Association • It's no secret that Cyprus indulges in magical masks and items of worship, specifically anything made for the worship of Kitsune or Inari. He collects, trades, and sells these items after appraising them (and assessing them for aetherical qualities and value). He often sends them overseas to Tural in collaboration with a native Merchant known as The Mask Merchant who in exchange sends over native goods for Cyprus to redistribute through his mischellanious connections.

Ichikawa Affiliation • Just how long Cyprus has been involved with the Ichikawa family seems uncertain. It's neither secret nor public knowledge how he came to be involved with the powerful Yakuza family but one thing's for certain, he's been there a while. Every living direct blood relative of the Ichikawa family has received a tattoo in some form or fashion from Cyprus, as well as close associates.Though, if one were to go poking and prodding, asking the older generation of Ichikawa Yakuza affiliates... one might learn of his longevity. Some even say he's been with them for the last 100 to 150 years, a fanciful claim that seems unrealistic for a humble Miqo'te man.Lawless Affiliation • Associated presently through the Ichikawa ownership of the venue. Position pending.

笑う門には福来る
Traditional Irezumi

Japanese tattoos, commonly called "Irezumi," represent a venerable tradition of tattoo artistry deeply rooted in Japanese culture for centuries. Renowned for their meticulous designs and striking use of bold black ink, these tattoos are meticulously crafted using a traditional handheld wooden tool called a "tebori." The "tebori" is a slender bamboo or metal implement with a needle grouping at its tip.
(Also known as Horimono & Wabori.)

マジックインク
Aether Ink

Beyond modern and traditional tattooing, there's a third form of art available for purchase from the mysterious fox-like Miqo'te. The art of Aetherial Inking, otherwise known as Majikkuinku. This is an expensive form of Yobori & often offered under the table to wealthy figures of status.

現代の入れ墨
Modern Yōbori

Contemporary Yōbori, commonly referred to as (Western) Modern Tattooing, adopts advanced methods employing the use of tattoo machines powered by electricity. This evolution is characterized by intricate designs, an expanded spectrum of colors, meticulous attention to detail, and the incorporation of innovative techniques and materials. Modern tattoos often reference pop culture and include new-age artistry rather than tradition.

So what'll it be?

A tattoo consultation is a crucial step in the tattooing process, serving to ensure both the client's satisfaction and the tattoo artist's ability to deliver a quality result. During the consultation, factors such as design preferences, placement, size, and color are discussed to align with the client's vision and expectations. Additionally, important considerations such as skin type, existing tattoos, and medical history are reviewed to ensure safety and suitability for tattooing. Furthermore, the consultation provides an opportunity to discuss pre-tattoo requirements, such as avoiding alcohol and certain medications, as well as the importance of proper aftercare to facilitate optimal healing and long-term tattoo preservation. By engaging in a thorough consultation, clients can make informed decisions, and tattoo artists can tailor their approach to create a personalized and satisfactory tattoo experience.

Traditional Symbolism •

Irezumi Reference Source

Animals & Myth

鯉 Koi ("Carp")
• The koi is more than just a colorful and collectible fish, it is also one of the most popular and beautiful stories, myths, tales, and tattoo themes, a beauty that belies its symbolic meaning. In tattoo imagery, especially in combination with flowing water, it symbolizes courage, control, and the ability to achieve goals with an understanding of life’s trials.
トラ Tora ("Tiger")
• Considered to be the supreme of all land animals by the Chinese; representing strength, courage, and long life. Tigers are also said to be able to ward off bad luck, disease, and Demons. Many old prints depict a tiger fighting demons (Oni) at the side of “Shoki” The Demon Queller. Tigers are one of the 4 sacred animals, symbols of the North, representing the season of Autumn and control of the winds.
蛇 Hebi ("Snake")
• It is no overstatement to say that the snake is likely the most symbolic animal in existence. They are said to have supernatural abilities, such as protection against illness, disaster, and bad fortune, and like the dragon that can bring rain, know the consequences that may come from improper actions. Throughout time they have become symbols of some of humanity’s greatest hopes and fears.
フー・ドッグ Karashishi ("Fu Dog / Lion Dog")
• No matter the origin the Fu Lion is fundamentally protective, strong, and courageous. It is even said that when they are cubs, their mothers throw them from cliffs so that only the strongest survive. Often in tattoo, the Foo Lion crawls menacingly, up or down an arm or leg to protect the wearer and symbolize aspiration of heroic ability and mind.
フェニックス Hou-ou ("Phoenix")
• Probably the most important of the mythological birds, its unmatched splendor and the immortality it derived by rising from its ashes. Tattooing the phoenix is done from different times of its existence, thus not always on fire! However, no matter the details of its origin, life, or death, it has become a symbol not only of the undying soul, resurrection, and immortal life but also one of triumph and rebirth in this life.
竜 Ryu ("Dragon")
• Also the Oriental dragon is not very often a cunningly malevolent beast. Instead, it is strength combined with wisdom and usually is benevolent. The choice of dragon is sometimes an aspiration to qualities of wholeness and wisdom.

Demons, Heads & Masks

鬼 Oni ("Demon")
• Oni, generally fearsome supernatural beings, are described as guardians of Buddhist hell, demons torturing souls for their misdeeds, and bringers of disease and mischief. Sometimes depicted as the gods of wind (Fujin & Raijin) showing that oni are not evil, but carry out duties and deeds. In many stories, Onijin is an all-powerful oni that is considered a king of the oni and can be depicted as powerful, and self-absorbed, but can still be over-powered by righteous forces or deities if necessary to re-balance an out-of-balance society or clan.
頭蓋骨 Zugaikotsu ("Skull")
• Skull tattoo designs carry a deeper significance beyond mere connotations of anger, fear, danger, or death. Originally, they symbolized "great change" and the commemoration of a significant life. In ancient societies, the skull represented an acceptance of mortality and embracing transitions as part of life's journey. It serves as a respectful celebration of those who have passed, with its association with death stemming from its emblematic portrayal of the greatest change humans undergo.
般若 Hannya ("Hannya Mask")
• The masks are used to convey the identity and mood of the various characters, who number nearly eighty in the different tales. The hannya mask is specifically used to represent a vengeful and jealous woman. Tattooing takes full advantage of these fanciful and engaging images, often using them in larger pieces of Japanese work or sometimes juxtaposing masks of good and evil characters.
生首 Namakubi ("Severed Head")
• Namakubi tattoos convey various messages, including courage, warning, respect for adversaries, and fearlessness. They symbolize the acceptance of fate with honor, embodying themes of bravery and dignity. Despite their graphic nature, namakubi tattoos are not solely intended for shock value; rather, they symbolize a facet of the circle of life. When depicting decapitation, they emphasize respect for the individual and their cause, while also serving as a cautionary symbol, illustrating the consequences of straying from a righteous path.

Flowers & Plants

牡丹 Botan ("Peony")
• The Peony is considered the best of flowers and is known as the King of flowers. In short, it means elegance and wealth. In the ornate, complex, and extensive body coverage that is typically involved in Japanese tattoos, it may seem as though entire gardens appear, but the floral repertoire of traditional Japanese tattoos is not as extensive as it might first appear, among the select flowers that are used is the peony, it is regarded as a symbol of wealth, good fortune and prosperity.
もみじ Momiji ("Maple Leaf")
• One of the most popular backgrounds is the Japanese maple, a symbol of time passing, a symbol of the wind. the design often conveys the leaves as floating, carried on the wind or in the water. In Japan, it’s also the symbol of lovers. In some Japanese tattoo designs, canopies of maple leaves float over shoulders and drift over the torso. A single leaf or a multitude of leaves are also potent symbols of regeneration and resurrection as they cycle through the seasons.
菊 Kiku ("Chrysanthemum")
• This blossom is often portrayed as a symbol of perfection. While the cherry blossom of spring references the brevity and bright beauty of our transient lives, the chrysanthemum plays the opposite role in tattoo artwork. It is the flower of fall and fullness, symbolizing not only a long life but a complete and happy one as well. Since it blooms right into winter, it may also symbolize the ability to mediate between life and death, between Heaven and Earth.
桜 Sakura ("Cherry Blossom")
• Their powerful symbolism has taken on a life of its own. For Japanese imagery, the beautiful period of its flowering and then the all too soon fading and subsequent scattering of petals on the wind, symbolizing life itself. The fragility of the cherry blossom is the fragility of human existence, its brief period of life, like our own; its movement toward death, indifferent to the good things of this world, is the ideal death for a warrior; and finally, its individual and perfect beauty is also ours.
蓮 Hasu ("Lotus")
• Lotus flowers hold profound symbolic significance in various Asian religions, particularly in India, where they symbolize awakening to life's purpose. While interpretations may vary across myths and traditions, religious significance is consistently attributed to the lotus. In contemporary contexts, lotus flower tattoos embody their religious symbolism, often representing the journey of life. Similar to the lotus emerging from muddy waters into exquisite beauty, individuals undergo transformation and growth, reflecting life's inherent struggles and eventual beauty.
